Southern Cross University was established in 1994 when the New South Wales Government amalgamated two regional institutions, the colleges of advanced education located in Northern Rivers and Coffs Harbour.
The Northern Rivers College of Advanced Education was established in 1976 from an amalgamation of several earlier tertiary institutions, including the Wollongbar Agricultural College (established in 1903), the Lismore Teachers' College (established in 1949), and the Northern Rivers Conservatorium of Music (established in 1962). The Coffs Harbour College of Advanced Education was established in 1982 from an amalgamation of several earlier tertiary institutions, including the Coffs Harbour Teacher's College (established in 1966) and the Solitary Islands Marine Park Research Centre (established in 1981).
